On a stunning site, overlooking the Hemi Matenga Scenic Reserve, completely surrounded by tall trees, AD Architecture needed to consider the sun and outlook in equal proportion when designing this compact home for its design-conscious owners. The trees towering above on the dramatic walk to the front door feel as if they block sunshine and light, but that’s okay, because this is the southern face of the house that holds mostly utility rooms. Two bedrooms (one which is used universally as a second sitting room), living, kitchen and dining face north and a clearing, before the bush and tree canopy continue. In fact, sunshine and light is plentiful enough to warrant a pergola with a developing vine for coverage.

Two pods – one for living, one for sleeping – are connected by a spacious entry to create an 89sqm home which functions beautifully for the two people who live here. The kitchen wraps around the wall of the living, dining area with a rectangular window that looks out through the trees. Windows and doors fill the north and west walls of this room. Both bedrooms also have doors out to the deck to add to that sense of connection with nature. Wrapped in dark Colorsteel cladding, the exterior blends into the bush undergrowth so as not to disturb the stunning natural environment.
