Building to Fit with the Landscape

When David Reid Homes Wellington director Tim Sunderland set about designing the latest Kapiti showhome, creating something tailored to the natural landscape was key.

The home is situated at Ferndale, a sustainable lifestyle development.

Taking in 200 degree views of natural wetlands, the home is designed so it works with established native plants and trees on the site, making the most of the sun and amazing views.

The three bedroom home strikes a perfect balance of style and functionality, with open living areas and both covered and uncovered outdoor living areas to cater for the Kiwi lifestyle.

“We designed the master bedroom to capture the views and get the morning sun, and the living room and family area to get as much of the all day sun as it could,” Tim says.

“It’s a great home for entertaining, there’s lots of access to the outside patio and covered areas … and there’s a walk-in pantry and a hidden wine cellar.”

The use of textures throughout the house, including band sawn cedar feature walls, add to the warmth of the single-gable home, Tim says.

“It’s modern, it’s got really nice textural elements to it, it just feels really homely.”

Set in an area known for its eco-friendly requirements, the new showhome has a Homestar 6 rating.

“The subdivision has some really good design principals and a whole lot of sustainable credentials and standards that have to be met,” he says.

“Every home has to be an architectural response to that particular site.”

Sustainability is becoming a required feature for many of the homes David Reid Homes Wellington is completing, Tim says.

“We are finding that our clients specifically are wanting low-cost, warm homes and are happy to spend a little bit of money to make sure in the long term they’re easier to maintain and easier to run, and relatively low-cost to run.”

The new showhome is open to view Monday to Friday, and Sunday from 1pm until 3pm, at 2 Kanuka Close, Ferndale, Waikanae.
