David Reid Homes Wanaka Owners Celebrate 20 Years in Business

  • Twenty years ago, Chris and Tracey took a leap of faith, investing in a David Reid Homes franchise with nothing more than a spreadsheet and a vision. Fast forward to today, and their Wanaka-based business has become one of the most respected names in high-end residential building. Over the past two decades, they have crafted award-winning homes, navigated industry challenges, and built lasting relationships with clients across New Zealand and beyond.

As they celebrate this incredible milestone, we sat down with Chris and Tracey to reflect on their journey - how it all began, the highlights, the challenges, and what is next for David Reid Homes Wanaka.

From Humble Beginnings to a Thriving Business

Chris and Tracey’s journey with David Reid Homes started in Southland, where they built homes for farmers and rural families. Their passion for quality and attention to detail quickly set them apart, and their reputation grew. In 2014, an opportunity arose to purchase the Wanaka franchise, a decision that marked a turning point for their business and personal lives.

Moving from Southland to Wanaka was no small decision. With decades of family history and friendships in Southland, the shift was bittersweet. However, in hindsight, both Chris and Tracey agree that it was one of the best decisions they ever made.

“Wanaka is a stunning place to live and work,” Chris says. “Every day, we wake up to the mountains and the lake, and it never gets old.”

The move also transformed their business. While Southland homes were often larger in size, Wanaka’s market brought a new level of design-conscious clients, many of whom were building second homes or architectural retreats. The demand for premium materials, bespoke designs, and high-end finishes pushed the team to evolve and refine their craft.

Building Award-Winning Homes and Lasting Relationships

Over the years, David Reid Homes Wanaka has been recognised nationally for its exceptional work. Winning House of the Year awards has been a highlight for the team, showcasing the quality and innovation that define their builds.

But beyond the awards, Chris and Tracey take the most pride in the relationships they have built with their clients. Many have come back to build multiple homes with them, and some have even become lifelong friends.

“For me, one of the most rewarding builds was my mum’s home,” Chris shares. “Mum had never built a house before, and at the time, she had a head injury, so she relied on me to make most of the decisions. Seeing how much she loves that home now is something I’m incredibly proud of.”

Another standout project was the home they built for Ben Smith, the former All Black, which remains a treasured space for his family a decade later.

“That’s what it’s all about,” Tracey adds. “It’s knowing that the homes we build are not just beautiful, but they stand the test of time and become part of our clients’ lives.”

Chris is immensely proud of the house they built for his mother in Wanaka.

    Navigating Challenges and Industry Changes

Twenty years in business comes with its fair share of ups and downs. When the 2008 financial crisis hit, many builders struggled, but Chris and Tracy, located in Southland at the time, remained surprisingly busy.

“Farmers kept us going,” Tracey explains. “When one sector struggles, another thrives. The dairy industry was booming at the time, and we had a steady stream of builds.”

The Covid-19 pandemic also changed the way they operate. With many clients now based overseas, Chris, Tracey and the team have become experts in remote project management.

“Technology has completely changed how we communicate,” Chris says. “We now work with people all over the world, managing builds remotely and keeping clients updated from afar. Covid forced us to embrace these changes, and it’s actually been a huge advantage.”

What’s Next for David Reid Homes Wanaka?

As they look to the future, Chris and Tracey remain focused on delivering exceptional homes that push the boundaries of design and craftsmanship. They are currently working on several exciting projects, including a large architectural build in Cardrona.

There is also talk of building a new show home, something that excites Tracey. “I love the process of designing something fresh and making it look amazing,” she says. They have a recently completed client build that has been opened as a display home for the public to view for a limited time.

For now, the goal is simple - keep doing what they love. “We’ve built a business that we’re incredibly proud of,” Tracey says. “We’re not going anywhere - we’re just getting started.”

    A Legacy Built to Last

Reflecting on two decades in business, Chris and Tracey are grateful for the journey. From building farmhouses in Southland to crafting multi-million-dollar architectural homes in Wanaka, they have evolved, adapted, and thrived. Their success is not just about the homes they build but the trust and connections they have formed with clients, architects, and the wider community.

When living in Southland, they often drove around Wanaka to get inspiration for the homes they wanted to build. Now based in Wanaka, they drive around and point out the homes they’ve built, dotted over the mountainous landscape.

“Our kids used to groan when we did it,” Chris laughs. “Now the grandkids do too.”

Twenty years in, and the passion is still there. David Reid Homes Wanaka is not just about building houses but about creating homes that stand the test of time.

Congratulations to Chris, Tracey, and the entire team on this incredible milestone!
