The three-bedroom, two bathroom, 193sqm home on the Kapiti Coast was selected by judges as the overall winner in the National New Home $450,000 - $600,000 category at the 2020 Registered Master Builders House of the Year Awards.
David Reid Homes Wellington and Kapiti managing director Tim Sunderland says after winning more than 60 Registered Master Builders awards over the past 12 years, picking up a highly coveted national winner was a huge achievement for the team.
“We are the Wellington region’s most awarded builder ever, and after being recognised many times over as quality and innovative builders at a regional level, and having 5 previous homes make it to the top 100, it is extremely exciting to receive our first national title,” Tim says.
“To create a national award winning custom designed home, you need a dedicated and experienced team, from the architects and designers to the colour consultants, kitchen designers, interior designers and landscape designers, it was a real team effort.”
Set in the eco-friendly subdivision of Ferndale, this architecturally designed home is a fine example of what can be achieved with concise, thoughtful and smart design, despite site constraints.
With clever exterior design features such the brick bollards, cantilevered outdoor area and wrap around decking, which flows seamlessly indoors to the light-filled living spaces with high stud ceilings and double height windows, the 193sqm home feels spacious, airy and joyful.
The home was designed to make the most of the sun and a stand of well established kānuka trees, which provide privacy and a beautiful outlook from all the east-facing windows.
The morning sunlight shining through the kānuka is a particular delight, Tim says, while the wide external framing, high insulation levels, and great solar gain make the home energy efficient, warm, cheap to run and easy to maintain.
“When we design homes, we encourage our clients to be as concise as possible with their footprint, which then gives them the opportunity to push the level of design & specification, helping to create elements that give a tangible benefit to the way they live,” Tim says. “Bigger is not always better.”
Priced between $450,000-$600,000, this home is a living testament to the high standards of living that can be achieved on a conservative budget.
